Premier David Eby has extended an invitation to Somali football referee Omar Artan following his refusal of entry into the United States.

He was set to officiate a number of games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, however a travel ban put in place by President Donald Trump halted those plans.

"Mr. Artan would be welcomed and celebrated in British Columbia for what he’s overcome and where he is today," Eby wrote in a post on X. "Let's have him referee in Vancouver."

Artan, named the best referee in Africa in 2025, was one of 52 chosen by FIFA to officiate the competition. He arrived in Miami, Florida on Saturday, but was denied entry following an 11-hour interrogation despite the fact he held a diplomatic passport and a single-entry visa.

According to BBC News, immigration officials cited "vetting concerns." He was promptly put on a plane to Istanbul.

"FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present," FIFA said in a statement. "A host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country."

All referees are required to be based at FIFA's training facility in Miami, thus unless the US changes its mind, it's unlikely Artan will be returning to North America, let alone officiating any games.
