The news used to bring Canadians together, helping us understand the complexities of life in an ever-changing world.
You'd be able to flip on the TV or open the paper and see the stories that really mattered, told in a way that was easy to understand.
Sure there were tabloids publishing what we today would call clickbait, but unless you actively sought those out, you were immune to their detrimental effects.
But then something changed; news became less about facts and more about pushing a narrative. This only accelerated with the advent of the internet. Before long, the clickbait and misinformation once limited to the fringes made its way into the mainstream — and everyone began to see it whether they wanted to or not.
The truth quickly got lost in the noise.
These days, far too many of us live in algorithmically-driven echo chambers, the content we see curated specifically to reinforce our existing beliefs or rile us up against an "enemy" we've never bothered to try and understand.
The media marketplace itself is dominated by legacy outlets and partisan publications, all vying for your attention. This isn't restricted to any particular portion of the political spectrum. Right, left, and everywhere in between, no one is immune.
Only tune in to one, and you'll think Canada is doomed. Only tune in to another, and you'll think everything's a-ok. Some paint our country as an irredeemable bastion of evil, while others conveniently ignore any aspect of our history that might make their readers uncomfortable.
You deserve better. Here at Sitka Media, we believe you're wise enough to have those hard conversations, mature enough to confront our past while focusing on the future, and clever enough to discern fact from opinion.
We also know that it's a two-way street — an audience can only engage thoughtfully with content that lives up to the same standards. That's exactly what we plan on giving you.
I've done my fair share of travelling, and I gotta say, Canada is still the best place on earth. Do we have our issues? Yes, of course. But unlike what some would have you believe, those challenges are far from insurmountable.
There is so much opportunity for growth here in the great white north, but too often the positives get lost in a sea of negative news. No longer.
We've got a bright future ahead of us, and Sitka Media is here to tell that story.
