During a press conference in Surrey on Thursday, Eby argued that simply lowering taxes on gas isn't enough, citing the federal government's recent move to reduce the price of gas.
"Some of the big anxieties I've had about saying we're gonna reduce provincial tax on gas is that the gas companies just suck it up," he said. "We cut the carbon tax, prices stayed high. The federal government cuts the excise tax, prices stay high."
Eby made it clear that without limiting fuel markups, "any tax cut is just a handout to the oil and gas companies that are already making records profits."
"We are going to empower [the BC Utilities Commission] not just to watch and report, not just to tell us the extra price we pay for inexplicable reasons here in BC," he said," but also just like the Atlantic provinces out east, we are going to ensure that the Utilities Commission has the power to stop the gas companies from gouging us at the pump."
