The BC NDP is promising to build a new middle school in Coquitlam's growing Burke Mountain neighbourhood if re-elected on Oct. 24.
The proposed school would complement a new 1,000-seat secondary school currently nearing completion in the area, as the community continues to see residential growth and increasing demand for classroom space.

Jodie Wickens, the BC NDP candidate for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, said the commitment reflects the need to expand school capacity in growing communities.
“The BC NDP is investing in the schools we need to keep up with our growing communities,” Wickens said.
The proposed middle school would add to a series of education infrastructure investments in the Coquitlam School District in recent years.
Since taking office in 2017, the BC NDP says more than 250 new or upgraded schools have been completed or are underway across British Columbia.
Asked about school overcrowding in Surrey, BC NDP leader David Eby highlights his government's record on building new student spaces:

In the Coquitlam School District, the party says 11 capital projects have added or will add 2,600 new student spaces and 1,375 seismically safer seats.
Eight of those projects have been completed, including a recent addition at École Dr. Charles Best Secondary.
The BC NDP did not provide a projected cost or anticipated student capacity for the proposed Burke Mountain middle school. The announcement comes two days after the BC Conservatives made a similar commitment to build a middle school in the neighbourhood.
