Popular BC park temporarily closing so First Nations can 'connect with the land'
BC Parks has announced that for two one-week periods this summer, Joffre Lakes Park will be closed to the general public in order to give local First Nations time to "connect with the land."
Similar closures have taken place over the past few years.

According to BC Parks, the popular spot just northeast of Pemberton will shut its gates to most visitors from June 20 to 27, and September 8 to 30. The first closure coincides with Vancouver's hosting of the FIFA World Cup, which is expected to bring countless tourists to the province.
"These periods will provide space for the Líl̓wat Nation and N’Quatqua to connect with the land," the agency explained.
According to Líĺwat Nation Political Chief Ku̓kwpi7 Skalúlmecw Dean Nelson, the nation is "striving to build a new relationship with BC Parks based on mutual respect and the recognition of our Aboriginal title and rights."
“Joffre Lakes Park lies within the unceded territories of the Líĺwat Nation and N’Quatqua and is integral to who we are as N’Quatqua and Líĺwat7ul," he said. "The establishment of Joffre Lakes Park has served to protect this unique and beautiful place from impacts of industrial activities. However, it also disrupted our traditional use and access to these lands."
