An event marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Tsawwassen came to an abrupt end following what police described as a "collision" at the nearby Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre.
According to the Delta Police Department, four pedestrians were struck. Two have since succumbed to their injuries.
"Preliminary information indicates the driver of the involved vehicle may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision," the force wrote in a statement. "The remaining injured individuals were treated at the scene by BC Emergency Health Services and transported to hospital."
Officers said the incident "is not related to the Truth and Reconciliation Walk that was taking place on Tsawwassen First Nation lands at the time," and that, "there is no ongoing risk to public safety."
It has since been revealed that the aforementioned walk was slated to end at the mall, where two new house posts were scheduled to be unveiled.
